Laini Michaelis is a Coyote

For Skutt Catholic senior and Nebraska native Laini Michaelis, the moment she knew South Dakota was the right fit wasn’t about flashy facilities or big crowds, it was about the people.

“When I went on my visit, I just really liked how friendly all the coaches were,” Michaelis said. “Even before I committed, they were always so kind and encouraging. They’d wish me luck in basketball and softball, and ]even now after I committed, they still do that and I think it’s really special and really nice to know they care about your other sports.”

That genuine connection made all the difference. Laini Michaelis, who plays for Nebraska Gold National 18U Singleton, committed to the University of South Dakota as part of the Coyotes’ 2026 class. And while the recruiting process can be stressful for any athlete, she says the South Dakota coaching staff, led by Coach Robert Wagner, stood out for their patience and support.

“They were really patient with me,” Michaelis said. “I got my offer early September, but it took me a long time because I had a lot going on and they never really gave me a timeline which I liked because it allowed me to get my thoughts whenever I was ready.”

Family Roots and Role Models

When asked about who’s inspired her the most, Michaelis doesn’t hesitate. Her parents have been there every step of the way.

“My dad’s been my coach for a pretty long time,” she said with excitement. “He’s taught me to stay patient with the sport, because softball’s a game of failure. He’s just been positive and motivational, with the recruiting process and even just in the game.”

Her mom has been equally important. “She’s just like my person that I can vent to about everything,” Michaelis said. “Especially through the recruiting process, she’d just listen and hear my thoughts, and that was one of the big things I needed.”

Laini Michaelis also credits her high school coach at Skutt Catholic for helping her grow into a leader both on and off the field. “He really pushed me to step up, even when I was a sophomore,” she said. “He helped me with my leader traits. I think that’ll carry through college and really help me in the future.”

The NE Gold Family

Playing for Nebraska Gold has been a constant in Michaelis’ life, she’s been with the program since its early days, and the team has shaped her both as a player and a person.

“We’re all friends,” she said. “I’ve been with a lot of these girls for a long time. When recruiting opened, it really helped to have people around me who were going through the same thing. Hearing similar things so you can talk about it, like see what they did and other insight.”

The NE Gold coaches have also been instrumental in guiding players through the recruiting process. “They’ll reach out to coaches for you, answer questions, help you know what to expect,” Michaelis said. “That support system really helps you stay confident.”

Laini Michaelis also mentioned her friendship with Tenley Campbell, another standout Nebraska Gold player who is committed to Tulsa.“I’ve known her since when we were younger. She’s super sweet, you can literally talk to her about anything.”

Sister Bonds and Shared Moments

One of the highlights of this past season for Michaelis has been playing alongside her younger sister, Leyton. “This year was probably the most fun I’ve ever had,” she said. “Leyton had her ups and downs, but I loved being there for her, going on walks, talking through things, reminding her it’s just a game. I even prayed for her before every game.”

Next year will be different, with the sisters on separate paths, but Laini is grateful for the memories they’ve made. “I wish we had one more season together,” she admitted. “But I know she’s going to do great things.”

Growth and Goals

On the field, Laini Michaelis is known for her versatility, primarily as a catcher, but also strong at first base. Offensively, she takes pride in her approach at the plate.

“My strongest part right now is definitely my hitting,” she said. “I love battling against different pitchers and finding ways to make contact.”

Still, she’s focused on improving behind the plate after a recent knee injury limited her catching time. “I want to keep getting better defensively and get stronger overall,” she said. “I’m working to get stronger and just put more distance on my hitting.”

Looking Ahead

As she prepares for the next chapter of her softball journey, Laini Michaelis is filled with excitement and determination to represent South Dakota.

“To Coyote fans, I’m ready to go,” she said. “I’m excited to see just what we can accomplish when I get there.”

With her work ethic, leadership, and grounded outlook, it’s safe to say the future looks bright in Vermillion.
