“The second I stepped on campus it was just different” – Payton Dye on choosing NC State
Payton Dye to the Pack
Payton Dye, class of 2027 third baseman from New Palestine High School in New Palestine, Indiana, has committed to the North Carolina State Wolfpack. The Wolfpack have been on the trail and continuously building for the future of the program guided by coach Lindsay Leftwich.
I had the opportunity to ask Payton a few questions on her decision to commit to the Wolfpack, how she feels knowing that her dreams are coming true, and how playing travel and high school ball has prepared her.
“The second I stepped on campus it was just different than any other place I’ve been,” said Dye. “The atmosphere, the people, and the community are really special.”
In a previous conversation with Coach Lindsay Leftwich, she talked about what all NC State and the Raleigh area has to offer. It seems that Dye has come to the realization herself, and is ready to call it home for at least four years of her life.
Speaking of Coach Leftwich and the staff, they made an amazing first impression on Payton. That definitely makes the decision a bit easier to make.
“My first impression of the staff was amazing. I’ve never connected to a staff as fast as them,” she said. “They’re nothing like any other coaching staff in the country and that’s what makes them so unique.”
Now Payton can breathe a little. Her plans for the future have been spoken for, and she also has a moment to reflect on all of the work she’s put in to make this dream come to reality.
“It is the biggest breath of fresh air knowing that I get to continue my athletic and academic career in Raleigh. It just proves that all the late nights, hard days, and extra pushes were all worth it, and that’s a feeling I can’t even explain. It’s so amazing,” said Dye.
There is always a lot that goes into earning the opportunity to commit to a school. Dye is grateful for the experiences of playing travel ball for the Louisville Lady Sluggers Huecker-Norwood. They have helped her become better in more ways than one.

“Playing for Louisville Sluggers Huecker-Norwood has been such amazing prep for not just college ball but also just becoming a better human being,” said Payton. “Coach Huecker and Coach Norwood know how to push us to our full potential and always get the best out of us on and off the field.”
Never forget about your home and community. That is where it all starts, and Payton Dye doesn’t take any of it for granted. The love and support is real.
“High school ball is the same way. Playing for your community is a feeling that is so surreal just seeing the support system you have. It’s taught me to just be where my feet are and soak in every moment before it’s gone,” Payton Dye explained.
Congratulations to Payton Dye on her commitment to North Carolina State University and the Wolfpack softball program. Thank you for taking the time to speak on this great time in your life.
