California LHP Mikayla Finn Stays Close to Home with Cal Softball

Mikayla Finn Chooses Cal

The California Golden Bears softball program, under the new direction of Coach Steve Singleton, is wasting no time building a solid foundation for the future. The Golden Bears have picked up a few commitments for the class of 2027 already. One of those is left handed pitcher Mikayla Finn out of the state of California.

Finn had an amazing high school season in 2025. She finished with a 21-1 record, a 1.13 ERA, an opponent batting average of .194, and fanned 210 over 148 innings pitched. Finn also helped Del Oro to a CIF Northern California Championship.

I had the chance to ask Finn a few questions, and one of those was how she stays locked in and turns in great performances in the circle. Mikayla informed me of her sharp focus and composure.

“For me, on the mound I focus on each pitch and the rest of the outside noise fades away,” said Finn. “I try my best to remain un-phased and keep my composure. That has made me stay locked in.”

Mikayla’s journey on the diamond is a big factor in how she has turned into a Division One commit. The high level travel and high school ball have benefited her well.

“Travel ball definitely exposes me to a very high level of play that has made me better over the years because me and my team play such elite competition,” said Finn.

However, she did not fail to give high school ball its credit as well. People often overlook that part and just think of the travel circuit as shaping a player the best.

“High school puts me on that pedestal in front of a lot of people and gives the experience of playing with pressure. Both have factored in greatly to my level of play, helping me with different areas of the game and making me a better well rounded player,” she said.

With Mikayla being a California native, playing at Cal is huge for her. You often see players who want to go far from home and experience new places. There is nothing wrong with that at all, but Mikayla Finn loves the fact that family will be able to see her play regularly.

“I love being close to home,” said Finn. “It’s a two hour drive and I’m very happy that my family will be able to come to more home games, especially with the new stadium coming.”

To wrap it up, I wanted to know what she thought about the experienced coaching staff that she will get to play for. They all have great experience in the game of softball, both playing and coaching. They know what it takes to succeed at a high level. I also asked what put Cal over everyone else.

“The coaching staff at Cal first of all have all come from amazing places, and being able to play for these coaches who have coached immensely successful players already is an amazing opportunity for me,” said Finn. “I get to be coached by amazing people with all kinds of experiences that will only make me better.”

“What made me choose Cal was definitely a combo of the closeness to home, the coaching staff, and the potential that I know is coming for the Cal program in the next couple seasons. I can’t wait to be a part of that, alongside a coaching staff that believes in each and every player.”
