Makenzie Mason Joins ECU Staff in Dual Role
On Monday, East Carolina Softball Head Coach Shane Winkler announced the addition of a familiar face to his staff. Former Pirate Makenzie Mason has been named the program’s new Director of Operations and will also serve as an Assistant Coach.
Mason spent two seasons at ECU after transferring from UConn, making an immediate impact on and off the field. During the 2024 season, she appeared in 56 games and posted a .296 batting average with a .313 on-base percentage and a .377 slugging percentage. She also drew 15 walks, stole four bases, and brought steady leadership to the Pirates lineup.
After wrapping up her playing career, Mason remained with the program as a student assistant last season, gaining valuable experience on the other side of things. She was also recognized for her academic efforts, earning a spot on the AAC All-Academic Team and landing on the Dean’s List in the Fall.
“We are very fortunate to be able to keep Makenzie around as our Director of Operations,” Winkler said. “She learned a great amount last year as a student assistant and she’s going to continue to add to our program in a number of ways. She is passionate about helping this program take our next step towards winning the American Conference.”
Mason’s return marks a key addition for the Pirates, blending firsthand knowledge of the program with a growing résumé.
