Xavier High School’s Maddyn Gates Chooses the Iowa Hawkeyes
Maddyn Gates Commits to Iowa Softball
The class of 2027 has been flying off the boards ever since September 1, and just a few days ago, Maddyn Gates voiced her commitment to the University of Iowa.
Gates is a junior at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where she is a utility player and pitcher. This commitment to the University of Iowa is special to her, as it has been both a dream and a family legacy.
“I honestly didn’t know if this would be possible for me. It was my dream to go to the University of Iowa. My dad, Ben Gates, played football there and my mom, Stef Gates, was a cheerleader, so Iowa is very special to my family,” said Gates.
Her words show a humble and grateful attitude that is deeply rooted in her. Maddyn also knows the road is just beginning and that there is more work ahead.
“I was so grateful and honored when the coaches called September 1. I definitely feel a sense of relief knowing my next destination, but also I know I have a lot of work to do between now and then to be able to make an impact when I get there.”
So what are some of the things Gates wants to sharpen? Maddyn is an all around player who can do just about anything.
“One of my goals is to become more versatile on defense and be able to play anywhere they need me on the field. I missed my whole freshman year with elbow surgery, so I want to spend the next two years leveling up my pitching and ball movement. I have always had a lot of power at the plate, but I want to improve my consistency,” said Gates.
The Iowa Hawkeyes softball program is now under the direction of Coach Stacy May-Johnson, who took over in May of this year. May-Johnson played for Iowa from 2003 to 2006 and was a three time All Big Ten selection, including the 2003 Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
She also previously served as an assistant from 2011 to 2014. The program is in good hands, with a clear vision for the future, something Maddyn Gates is excited to join.
“When I got to know Coach Stacy and the staff on my visit, I really felt welcome, and I feel like they have an awesome vision of where they want to take the program. I definitely want to be a part of that. The fact that Coach Stacy is a former Hawkeye is great because there is a special connection to the Iowa community and culture,” said Gates.
There’s a big importance in having supportive and encouraging parents. It is a huge bonus when they know exactly what it takes to reach where you are trying to go. Maddyn is fortunate to experience that.
“My dad has been a huge influence on me as an athlete. He played football at Iowa and knows what it takes to reach that level,” said Gates. “He has always encouraged me to be disciplined and give my best effort. He has taught me the importance of believing in myself and being grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.”
Maddyn Gates has an exciting future ahead and is focused on the important things going forward. This is a special opportunity for her, and that often makes people work even harder to fulfill their commitments. Thank you Maddyn Gates for taking the time to speak, and good luck on your journey.
