Brooklyn Jones Brings Her Speed and Fire to the College of Charleston
Brooklyn Jones Takes Her Talents to Charleston, South Carolina
When I talked with Brooklyn Jones, it didn’t take long to sense her love for the game and her competitive fire. A 2027 outfielder from Goodpasture Christian School in Nashville, Tennessee, Jones also suits up for Fury Platinum X-Hutchins on the travel circuit. She recently gave her commitment to the College of Charleston, a decision that felt natural after her first visit.
But Jones’ story is also unique because she’s not the only high-level athlete in her family. Her older brother, Brendan Jones, is a prospect in the New York Yankees organization and ranked No. 15 in their system. Both Brendan and Brooklyn share a similar style of play: lefty bats, lefty arms, and plenty of speed to go along with their grit.
Brooklyn recently talked with me about her commitment, what drew her to Charleston, the impact of her family, and what Cougar fans can expect when she arrives on campus.
A Perfect Setting
For Brooklyn Jones, Charleston felt like home the second she stepped on campus.
“The College of Charleston setting was cool. It gives me the best of both worlds: a school in the middle of a city and a beach minutes away,” she said. “There aren’t many colleges with that kind of setting. The campus and facilities are set in a gorgeous backdrop. The academic assistance they provide was really appealing, especially since I plan to pursue a pre-dental path.”
That balance of high-level softball and strong academics sealed the deal for her.
A Coaching Staff That Felt Like Home
Of course, picking a school is about more than just the scenery. For Brooklyn Jones, it was also about who she’ll be learning from on the field.
“The staff there sealed the deal. They immediately made me feel like I was home,” Jones said of head coach Maggie Mrowka and her staff. “Coach Mrowka and her staff were extremely energetic and shared their vision for the future. She has so many exciting plans. I was able to watch a fall game while I was there, and their coaching style fit how I play the game. They focused on finding a way to get on base and then being aggressive on the base paths. I quickly could see I would fit in perfectly.”
Family First
When asked about her biggest inspirations, Jones was quick to point to the people closest to her.
“My family have been huge supporters of pushing me to be the best in whatever I do,” she said. “I’ve been blessed to be surrounded by a lot of coaches that have poured so much into helping me along the way. I’ve always looked up to those that work hard and leave it all on the field.”
Lessons from Brendan
It’s hard to ignore the impact of Brooklyn’s older brother, Brendan, who is carving out his own career in pro baseball. For Brooklyn, his guidance has been a steady influence.
“Brendan has probably influenced me the most regarding how I play the game and this process,” she said. “We are both left-handed center fielders who are usually placed at leadoff in the lineup. My style of play is very much like his. He was small, like me, growing up, so hitting home runs wasn’t a huge part of his game in his high school years. His ability to find a way to get on base was his strong point. Then he used his speed to steal and move up on the base paths. I’m not big, sitting at 5 ft. But I use my patience and eye for balls and strikes to draw walks, bunt when needed, and then use my consistent ability to get base hits to feed my run game.”
Brooklyn also shared how Brendan continues to pour into her journey.
“He has influenced my work ethic, and I’ve watched how hard he has worked to get where he is,” she explained. “He watches films of my hitting, throws to me, and we frequently throw together during his off-season. He encouraged me to find where I love, where I thought I could contribute early, and what felt like home. Then he said my work just begins.”
Looking Ahead to the Lowcountry of South Carolina
Brooklyn Jones is already imagining the day she steps on campus, wearing maroon and gold.
“I can’t wait to be on campus in a couple of years,” she said. “I want to help the Cougars compete for a championship and make it to the NCAA tourney. I plan to be prepared on day one to help this program in whatever role that I can contribute. I have always approached everything with the mindset to leave things better than how I found them. I can’t wait for the opportunity.”
With her speed, her scrappiness, and the influence of a pro athlete brother in her corner, Brooklyn Jones brings a unique blend of fire and finesse to the College of Charleston. Cougar fans will soon find out that she’s not just following in family footsteps, but she’s paving her own way.
