September 1st Brings Multiple Softball Happenings

September 1st had multiple happenings today. First of all it is Labor Day, I hope everyone enjoyed. Second, class of 2027 softball players started receiving those long awaited calls from coaches across the country. If you did not, you will be fine, give it time. Today also marked the opening of applications for the American Collegiate League for the summer of 2026.

Current collegiate softball players and even signed freshmen going into the fall of 2026 can take part in any of the five regional leagues. There are some new and exciting developments for next summer, which you can find in my previous article on the ACL.

FGCL Experience

One of the most popular and the first league ever in this setup founded by Ryan Moore is the Florida Gulf Coast League. I spoke with current Georgia Bulldogs junior utility player Emma Castorri earlier today.

Castorri loves her experience in the FGCL and had nothing but great things to say. She is already set to return in the summer of 2026 for another go at it. This past summer with the Myakka City River Mocs, Castorri slashed .395/.490/.953 with seven home runs, 18 RBIs, and 15 runs scored in 20 games played.

Building Confidence and Connections

So, what has playing in the FGCL done for Castorri?

“The FGCL was a huge help to me for many reasons. I not only gained my confidence back by playing in the league, but I also met so many amazing people in the process. Going back to school in the fall, I felt refreshed after coming off of an awesome summer. The league reminded me that the game of softball can be fun while also being challenging. I had the time of my life making new friends and experiencing the game from a new perspective.”

I know many may be on the fence or have doubt. Maybe you do not know how this can benefit you or if it is worth your time. Truth is, you will get a month of good work, and that is not the only thing.

“If nothing else is gained from playing in the league, connecting with new people from all over the country was the most valuable part of the experience,” said Castorri.

Shared Goals and Growth

The bond and connections make this an even greater experience and those are things that you will never forget. Also, everybody was there with the same intentions and goals. This is a part of what these leagues are set out to do for the players.

“It was nice knowing that everyone was there with the same goals in mind. Being around a group that was driven to the same extent as I was kept us all in check and made each of us better.”

Playing by the Beach

In reference to the Florida Gulf Coast League, the location is undeniably one of the greatest destinations to spend a month in the summer. How can you not enjoy playing by the beach? Definitely a place to feel free and low pressure.

“Being only 10 minutes away from the most beautiful beaches was such a great addition to my experience as well. The league was so good for me because there were no prior expectations except to go down and have fun. The feeling of being able to have fun and play without pressure was so important for me, and it truly shifted my perspective on the game overall.”

Just the Beginning

I want to thank Emma Castorri for taking the time to share her experiences. Today marked the official opening of applications for the summer of 2026, and Founder Ryan Moore told me earlier that submissions are already coming in.

“Just an exciting time to watch these leagues, expand throughout the country as more and more new players wanna grow their game and help their college program, said Moore.”

As mentioned at the beginning, there are five regional leagues across the country, now including the newest site in Boston, Massachusetts with the New England Collegiate League. To learn more or to apply, visit americancollegiateleague.com.
