“Pressure is a privilege” – Malloree Harr embraces the challenge
Early Work Ethic and Family Influence
“Malloree’s got some natural gifted talent, of course, but she has to work extremely hard to be where she’s at. While she might not be the fastest or the strongest or the most athletic, I think her work ethic is what sets her aside from other players in her age group,” said her mother, Allison Harr.
Malloree Harr is a 13 year old two way softball player with the maturity, drive, and work ethic well beyond her years. Nothing comes easy, and Harr understands that success only comes through putting in the work.
Her softball roots run deep. Allison is a 2009 inductee into the UTC Athletics Hall of Fame after a standout career from 1996 to 1999.
“We did a lot while I was at UTC. We helped build Frost Stadium, the indoor facility that’s there now, and then just playing under Ralph and Karen Weekly really kind of made me the player I ended up being,” said Allison.
Handling Pressure with Maturity
I had the opportunity to meet with Malloree just before her scheduled session with softball specialist Michelle LaCourse. She did not come across as someone content to do the bare minimum. Her willingness to practice, learn, and put in the extra effort was very clear.
Harr is not fazed by pressure either. In our conversation, I asked how she manages to keep things fun while competing at such a high level. As Harr was one of the youngest players in the pool for the USA U15 National Team, she embraces the challenge.
“Pressure is a privilege, and the pressure that you have for me just makes the game more fun. It just makes me a better player and a better teammate as well,” said Harr.
Even with her age, the maturity in her approach stands out.
The USA Experience
That work ethic paid off in a big way. Harr earned a spot on the USA U15 Women’s National Team and competed earlier this year in the Pan American Games in Mexico, where Team USA captured gold.
“Being at the opening ceremonies, you cannot help but get emotional. Watching her be so grown up, poised, and mature, representing the United States on an international level at 13, is a moment I will never forget,” said Allison Harr.
Malloree began the combine and selection process at just 12 years old and quickly impressed everyone involved.
“That was a last minute decision to put her through the HPP combine. We went down to Hoover just to see where she stacked up in her age group among the best of the best,” said Allison.
“Thousands of kids tried out, and then I think over 500 were in Vero Beach for the final selection,” she added.
Long story short, Harr made it through the process and earned her spot on Team USA. As humble as she is, neither Allison nor Michelle believes it has truly registered with her just how much she has already accomplished.
Boyd Buchanan Season
Malloree is currently playing her 8th grade season at Boyd Buchanan School in Chattanooga, Tennessee. In the season opener earlier this week she struck out 10 batters in a win.
“It all starts with practice because you play like you practice. If you practice hard, you will play hard and the game will take care of itself,” said Malloree.
Practice and work. As the saying goes, the fun is in the winning.
A Complete Skillset
Her IQ, the mix of pitches, and the velocity she already produces, confirmed in the mid to upper 60s, all make her stand out. Now she is beginning to mix in the rise ball, one of the most effective pitches in softball.
“We are working on learning where to place that rise ball early in the count, and then later on throwing a chase rise that starts a little higher and gets more up out of the zone.”, said LaCourse.
The two way threat is there as well. Malloree has a lot of pop in her bat, and not only is she strong, she is already a quick thinker in the box.
“Good hitters adjust from at bat to at bat, great hitters adjust from pitch to pitch, and Malloree is already working to make those adjustments pitch to pitch,” said LaCourse.
Malloree Harr: Just Getting Started
Malloree Harr has great potential. She is a class of 2030 prospect with her entire high school career ahead of her. From what I have seen, there is nothing stopping her from accomplishing whatever she sets her mind to.
“I have been doing this for 15 years, and I have never had a kid with this level of talent, especially as young as she is,” said LaCourse.
Malloree’s story is only beginning, but it is already one filled with lessons that many older players can learn from. Her willingness to put in the work, her ability to handle pressure with grace, and her constant pursuit of improvement are the characteristics of a player who will go far.
What stands out most is not just her talent, but the way she carries herself. Malloree Harr is a reminder that greatness in this game comes from a blend of discipline, humility, and passion. If she continues on this path, her name will not just be known in Chattanooga or with the USA U15 National Team, but across the softball world for years to come.
