Today the California Golden Bears softball program officially named Steve Singleton as the ninth head coach in program history.

Singleton arrives in Berkeley after six seasons with the University of Texas, where he served as assistant coach and associate head coach. Most recently, he played a major role in helping the Longhorns reach their first-ever national championship run during the 2025 season.

“We are thrilled to welcome Steve back to the Bay Area and introduce him as the head coach of our softball program,” said Cal administrators Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O’Neill. “His proven track record of success, along with his passion, leadership, and commitment to developing student-athletes on and off the field, makes him the perfect fit to lead our team. We’re confident that under Steve’s leadership, along with our new stadium opening in 2027, our softball program is positioned to become one of the premier programs in the nation.”

Before stepping into coaching, Singleton built a standout playing career. He played collegiately at the University of San Diego for three years before being selected in the 11th round of the 2006 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins. Over six professional seasons, Singleton appeared in 654 career games across rookie to AAA levels as a shortstop and second baseman.

He finished his professional career with a .282 batting average, earning three consecutive Minor League All-Star selections from 2008 through 2010. Singleton was also invited to Major League spring training in 2010 and competed in the prestigious Arizona Fall League in 2009. During the 2006 season, he led the Appalachian League in batting average (.340) and triples (5). In 2010, he tied for second across Minor League Baseball in doubles with 43.

Singleton later transitioned to player development roles in the Twins organization, leading offensive efforts for the Gulf Coast League Twins. That experience helped pave the way for his success at the college level, where he became a key architect in Texas’ offensive surge and postseason rise.

“I’m extremely excited to lead the Cal Bears softball program,” Singleton said. “I am immensely thankful to Jay Larson, Jenny Simon-O’Neill, and Gordon Bayne for their help through the process. I’m very grateful to Texas for the opportunity they gave me over the last six years.

With all that said, I am extremely excited about what we can accomplish in Berkeley. I think with the new stadium, the investment and support of the department, in-state recruiting, and the degree offered by Cal — mix all that with a great location — and it’s primed to be a special place.”

With championship pedigree and deep player development roots, Singleton now begins a new chapter in Berkeley as he looks to shape the future of Cal softball.
